An Angel Island Odyssey

This concept goes way beyond theatre-in-the-round. Literally. On your own personal odyssey, you journey 3-4 miles on roads and trails around Angel Island, encountering monsters, nymphs, gods and mortals. It’s interactive theater at its best, and perhaps most scenic.

We Players, Angel Island State Park and the Angel Island Conservancy present “The Odyssey on Angel Island State Park.” It’s an all-day, interactive performance adventure featuring 12 actors playing 40 roles. The story unfolds as you explore the island – its historic buildings, cement bunkers and natural environs.

Ferries leave for the island from San Francisco at 9:20 AM. The performance begins at 10:30 AM and concludes at about 4 PM. There are performances every Saturday and Sunday now through July 1.

One Last Look At Sunday’s Fireworks

Beautiful bridge, beautiful night, beautiful show. The Golden Gate Bridge 75th Anniversary fireworks were simply picture perfect, and we’ve got the photos to prove it.

We’ve posted three of our favorite images from the SFist.com collection. Visit that page, and you’ll also find links to videos of the fireworks as well.

Let’s Not Forget

Hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day, but let’s not forget the day is dedicated to those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. May they all rest in peace.

Epic 3-Day Weekend Ahead

The Golden Gate Bridge 75th Anniversary is finally here. Most of the big events take place Sunday, from 11 AM to 11 PM. You’ll find stages with bands and live performances on the Marina Green and Crissy Field. Fireworks, launched from the Bridge, are scheduled to run from 9:30 to 9:50 PM, with KFOG radio providing a soundtrack on air. Weather forecasts indicate there won’t be any fog, so the evening should be perfect for fireworks.

See the complete schedule of events at the Anniversary’s official site, along with a link to the Golden Gate Bridge Flickr page, where you’ll find more than 3,200 images of the bridge – three of which we’ve posted here.

Of course, lots more is taking place this weekend as well, including the Carnaval Festival Saturday and Sunday in the Mission. Click here for a fairly complete list of Memorial Day Weekend activities. Need we mention that Macy’s is having a Memorial Day Sale?

SF Parks Best In The Nation!

We’re not just making this up. The Huffington Post published a report today saying San Francisco was ranked #1 in the country in a recent survey conducted by The Trust for Public Land.

Why us? 98% of our residents live within a ten minute walk of a park, and 18% of the City is made up of park land, a number that is far greater than the national average of 10.3%.

Yes, if so inclined you could call this an important “benchmark” study, so to speak.

SF Carnaval 2012 This Weekend

As if the 75th Anniversary celebration of the Golden Gate Bridge isn’t enough, this weekend SF Carnaval takes to the streets in the Mission.

Now in its 34th year, the festival takes place Saturday and Sunday and spans seven blocks, serving up ethnic foods, music, dance, arts and crafts. It’s Carnaval, so there must be a parade, and that takes place Sunday, beginning at 9:30 AM at the corner of 24th and Bryant streets. 65 parade contingents from around the world will participate.

The good news is Monday’s a holiday, and you have all day to sleep in should you overextend yourself Saturday and Sunday.

Some Perspective on the Warriors’ Announcement

This morning the NBA’s Warriors are expected to announce that they are moving the team from Oakland to San Francisco. That’s exciting news no doubt, especially on the heels of the 49ers’ recent decision to build a new stadium in the South Bay.

Word has it the new arena would be located on Piers 30 and 32, around the corner from AT&T Park. It would open in 2017. Sounds easy enough. If only that were true.

San Jose Mercury News sports columnist Mark Purdy puts it all in historical perspective. When you’re done reading the column, you’re pretty convinced that winning next year’s NBA championship is more likely than completing this project. If you’ve been following the team, you know those odds aren’t good.

People have been trying to build an arena in San Francisco since 1947. A nine-story indoor arena on the waterfront? We’ll have to see.

New Day, New Look

Notice anything different? Hope so. After more than 160 posts, we’ve changed the name of this blog from “SFDentro” to “SF City’s Best.” We’ve also modified its look and added a few bells and whistles. We even have a new tagline: “One Indispensable Item A Day.”

Our purpose is to serve up one single great thing about San Francisco every weekday – that very special restaurant, that big piece of news or that one event, exhibit or activity you won’t want to miss.

What better way to start than by looking back at yesterday’s Bay to Breakers race. It was a spectacular day weather-wise. Did you run, walk or crawl?

SF’s Boulevard – Best Restaurant in the Nation

Last week’s winner of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurant was San Francisco’sBoulevard, on the Embarcadero waterfront. This is like winning an Oscar – maybe even bigger than that when you consider the sheer number of restaurants you’re going up against, and a reputed East Coast bias on the part of judges.

The Huffington Post published a nice interview with Nancy Oakes, chef and founder of Boulevard. She comments on the awards competition, current culinary trends and her favorite chefs. Well worth reading.

What Are San Francisco’s Most Iconic Foods?

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Inside Scoop columnist Paolo Lucchesi published a great feature yesterday. He asks the question, “What are San Francisco’s most iconic foods?” There’s a slideshow, so you can see what made his list. There are 24 items in all and we’ve posted photos of three of our favorites below.

Take a look at his list. Anything missing? What would you add?

Air-dried Salumi

IT’S-IT ice cream

Cioppino
